In a groundbreaking demonstration, a team of researchers at ORNL has successfully wirelessly charged a light-duty passenger electric vehicle at an astonishing rate of 100-kilowatts (kW) with an impressive efficiency of 96%. The key to this remarkable feat lies in the utilization of polyphase electromagnetic coupling coils with rotating magnetic fields. This patented system developed by ORNL enables the transfer of power across a five-inch air gap to a Hyundai Kona EV, employing electromagnetic fields related to the wireless charging mechanisms commonly found in small consumer devices.

Lead researcher Omer Onar explains, “We’ve achieved the highest power density in the world for a wireless charging system for this class of vehicle.”  ORNL’s technology ability to deliver unparalleled power densities, surpassing conventional coil technology by a factor of 8-10, sets it apart. This means that ORNL’s system can significantly increase the battery charge state of an EV by up to 50% in under 20 minutes, revolutionizing the charging experience for EV owners.  This means that ORNL” system can significantly increase the battery charge state of an EV by up to 50 in under 20 minutes revolutionizing the charging experiencefor EV owners

While previous research had managed to achieve a 120-kW charge using conventional coil technology in laboratory settings, ORNL’s accomplishment represents a significant milestone in practical vehicle integration. The secret lies in the lightweight and compact design of the polyphase electromagnetic coupling coils, which allow for maximum power density within minimal space.

The incorporation of rotating magnetic fields generated by the coil phase windings further enhances the charging efficiency, paving the way for rapid and efficient wireless charging solutions for passenger EVs.

By enabling faster and more efficient charging capabilities, this technology has the potential to accelerate the widespread adoption of EVs, contributing to the global efforts to mitigate climate change and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. ORNL’s relentless pursuit of innovation continues to drive progress in sustainable transportation, paving the way in a future where electric vehicles are not only practical but also seamlessly integrated into our daily lives.
